MRC Birthday Party Featured Artist: Good Luck Darkstar

June 24, 2009

The band, named after the John Carpenter film Dark Star, is led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Bret Krock, who fronted local faves Eighty Katie at the beginning of the decade and, more recently, was seen alongside several of the city’s most prolific musicians in his previous project, The Lights. In fact, the Good Luck Darkstar album You’ll Need It evolved out of an aborted Lights album project. The final product is a departure from the energetic, more retro rock sound of  Eighty Katie. The new music is  more melodic and more robust, though still in a classic-sounding rock vein.

Krock recruited a new batch of musicians to translate his album to the stage, including local veterans Preston Todd on drums, axe-grinder John Guttery on guitar, and Dirk Kitterlin on bass. This  lineup has proven to do a fantastic job of not only bringing Krock’s work to life, but each adding their own influence to their respective parts.
