This Weekend in Memphis Music

May 28, 2010

This city is basically begging you not to go out of town this weekend, because while it is Memorial Day and the open road and/or gas station rotisserie hot dogs might be calling your name, Memphis musicians are pulling out the stops over the next three days. Check it out:

  • Tonight at The Warehouse, Grace Askew will be throwing a shin dig to celebrate the release of Until They Lay Me Down to Rest, her first full-length record. The show will feature Jeremy Stanfill and Dave Cousar with a special appearance by Richard Ford. Cover is $10 (or you can buy the album) and includes free wine, beer and munchies.
  • Tomorrow at Minglewood Hall, check out the Marvin Gaye Tribute Concert, featuring the MRC’s own Keia Johnson. The concert starts at 7 p.m. (doors at 6 p.m.) and you can head here to grab your advance tickets.
  • Sunday night at Nocturnal, Shabbadoo will celebrate the release of their LP There You Are. They’ll be joined by Cold Blooded Three and Wampa. The cover is $5 and you can enjoy $2 beers all the live-long night.
  • All weekend on SiriusXM’s The Loft, you can catch the Big Star Tribute Concert recorded live at the Levitt Shell on May 15. They’ll be airing it on Saturday at 5 p.m. and then re-airing it Sunday at 6 a.m. and Monday at 5 p.m. (All times Central Standard.)
