Dana Key, 1953 – 2010
DANA JAMES KEY
DANA JAMES KEY, a resident of Collierville, TN, was born December 30, 1953 in El Dorado, Arkansas to James Robert and Joan Key of Olive Branch, MS. He passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010 of a blood clot at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Anita McDonald Key, and his children, Scottie, Andrew, and Eli all of Collierville. He also leaves two sisters, Jo Lyn Beaver and her husband David, their two sons Nick and Zach, and Jamie Roberts and sons, Ryan and Riley. Dana grew up in Whitehaven and graduated from Hillcrest High School 1972 where he played baseball. While in school, Dana founded and performed with several innovative rock bands. With his life-long friend, Eddie DeGarmo, they formed the contemporary Christian rock band “ DeGarmo and Key” whose music was nominated for seven Grammy Awards and 17 Dove Awards. Throughout this musical career, Dana never lost his focus that the music was only a means of sharing his Christian faith. After their mutual decision to disband “DeGarmo and Key”, Dana finished his seminary degree at Mid South Bible College (now known as Crichton College). Also during this time, Dana was a co-founder of a record label, Ardent Christian Music. He signed and developed DC Talk, Skillet, Big Tent Revival, Todd Agnew, and more. Dana was passionate about missions. He was a spokesperson for Mission Aviation Fellowship, the Pray for Peace Campaign with George H. W. Bush, and Compassion International. He also was the author of three books. In 2002 he founded The Love of Christ Church and has served as their pastor. He loved his sheep more than he loved his own life. Over his life time, God used Dana to lead over one hundred thousand to Christ. Many of those he led to Christ have kept in touch with Dana and are also in the ministry themselves. Dana was a beloved son, brother, husband, daddy and friend. We all cherished him and his love for life and his Lord. To honor Dana, and in his own words “Go out and share the love of Christ” In lieu of flowers please send any donations to The Love of Christ Church.
